I started training with Claire 15 months ago when I realised I needed to get professional help to lose some weight. Having been a yo-yo dieter I had previously been to personal trainers with limited success, however the moment I met Claire for our initial consultation I felt I had made the right decision. Some personal trainers aren't really 'personal', they think a one size fits all, no pain no gain regime suits everyone, but Claire took the time to really understand my current situation and developed a truly personalised program that eased me back into exercise and gave me small wins to boost my confidence. She then steadily progressed me beyond what I imagined I could achieve and I have lost 17kg and counting - not to mention regained confidence and energy, and developed a new relationship with food. This is the longest time I have consistently lost weight without regaining and has included times of illness, holidays, Christmas etc otherwise know as 'life'.

Claire has been my personal trainer for the last 18 months. I was fairly stressed at work and my sleep and fitness were suffering. As I had a membership with Les Mills I looked for a personal trainer to help me get back on track and Claire seemed to have the personality and skills I could work with. I have always enjoyed the gym, the classes, cycling cross-trainer etc. but have struggled with weights, they are so boring!! Over the years I have combined the gym with running, dragon boats and outrigger canoeing. After my hip replacement I cut back on the running and needed something else. Claire sat with me and we worked out a program. The hour seemed to fly we would discuss everything and anything, as we worked through our program. All the time Claire would be focussing on my goals, my diet, tweaking thinks here and there and the weeks passed. As the weights increased I could see and feel the improvements and it felt good. However I have been in a few accidents and my body is a bit broken. I was impressed by the way Claire would listen to me as I commented on how I felt my body was reacting. If there was any pain with an exercise we might back off a bit or my program would change. There was this period where both Claire and I got to know what my body could cope with and what it couldn’t. In one of my accidents I broke my arm and crushed my radial nerve which impacted on the muscles in my forearm. As a result some of the lifts felt awkward and I was uncomfortable doing them. Those exercises were quickly removed and replaced with another to achieve the same result. As I love numbers Claire was always able to tell me how this lift compared with my best. After the session Claire would total my lifts so I knew what the total weight I lifted in the hour. This gave me something else that I could measure my progress on, and this was important until it wasn’t. There were some lifts where I was physically exhausted upon completion which would impact on the rest of the session. Claire would be making notes and updating my program suggesting different combinations or a different sequence. Although I was doing all the lifting it really felt like we were working together, as I was doing the last set, Claire was setting up the next lift and reminding me that I said “next time we should start at this weight”. Claire is constantly giving me feedback listening to what I need, what I like and don’t like. Providing a challenging and rewarding environment that I enjoy, I look forward to my gym visits I still have a very busy life but I love the hard workouts. You might think this sound like serious stuff, well it is but we seem to have clicked and it is so much fun, the workouts are full of laughter as we lift the weights and clown around. I am fortunate to have stumbled across a personal trainer that I enjoy working with and get results.

Outdoor activities and forgetting my age has taken a toll on me and I needed to build up core strength to protect myself going forward. The first thing she did which impressed me was to understand me as a person and my medical history including what my goals were and how to achieve them. She then introduced me to MyFitnessPal, to really understand nutrition and my diet. That had an immediate effect on weight lose alongside the effective exercise program she put together. She will start you off slowly and then build up your strength and capability so that you protect yourself as you get better and stronger. She is all about technique and getting it right. That has been shown to me by others (including other PT’s) commenting on my good technique at Les Mills. I really enjoy the detailed exercise program with photos as I find them far easier use when I am at the gym. I would highly recommend Claire if you want results.

I first started seeing Claire in 2005 at the age of 23 when I had to prepare for the Cure Kids Great Adventure Race. I was in great panic by the time I went to Claire as I was (very) far from fit. But Claire devised a very effective programme which helped me build up the muscle strengths required to run and mountain bike through the race. She was targeted in her approach and with her help, I completed the 9-hour race and couldn’t be happier with my performance. I first met with Claire in August 2016 having already started a healthy eating lifestyle but with the need to get focused and motivated with my exercise.I found Claire so approachable and she really related to my goal of wanting to become functionally fit. As a mum, like me, she knew that family comes first but that fitness and self-care are also extremely important!
I met with Claire once a week and also attended Mums Club sessions. Claire set me up with a program that I felt comfortable going in and doing by myself and increased my confidence to try exercises I had never thought possible. With a focus on resistance training my strength increased significantly and I gained lean muscle and a level of fitness that I have never had before. I love chatting with Claire at our sessions, talking with her makes me forget I’m even training sometimes. Yet the next day I can definitely tell I’ve done some work!
One of my other goals was to get back on the netball court having had a knee injury some years ago. Claire was the number one reason I got back on the court in February 2017. From encouraging me to go to physio, making me do my rehab and introducing me to Body Balance classes, I got back on the court and that was one of the highlights of my year. Claire has been my trainer for 2 years now & with out doubt I would have to say she would have to be one of the best trainers I have seen around. When my youngest child turned three, and I was still carrying the accumulated “baby weight” of four pregnancies, I decided it was time to do something about it. One of the main reasons for signing up with Claire was that i wanted improve my general fitness and also do some sport specific training for the NZ Canoe Polo Nationals. I came to Claire as I had been living with chronic fatigue syndrome for over a year, and I was looking to integrate gentle exercise into my routine in order to facilitate recovery. Claire has been absolutely amazing and after nearly a year of training with her I have made significant improvements in my energy levels, along with marked increase in strength and stamina. Claire is always so understanding and flexible, and closely monitors my energy levels so that our training programs are constantly modified with varying intensity levels to suit how I am feeling on any particular day. Claire first trained me for roughly a year in the build up to my 21st birthday in 2007, ending our training at the time she first went on maternity leave. At the time my goals were to lose weight, improve my muscle tone and overall fitness. Claire’s training exceeded my expectations, combining good humour and great conversation with surprisingly hard training. As soon as Claire came back to Les Mills I was eager to train with her again. This year I am back training after recovering from major reconstructive surgery to my hip in 2012, due to a condition called hip dysplasia. My ‘goals’ are very different this time around, with overall fitness, strength and rehabilitation now permanent fixtures in my life. In the shorter term, I also have my wedding to look forward to in March 2014 – so of course that means I want to look my best! The stand out characteristic I have found with Claire is that no matter whom you are, where you are at in life, or what your goals are, she makes a point to take in and truly consider what the individual’s needs are and what is appropriate for them, now. Since working with Claire I have increased my fitness, strength, flexibility and confidence. Claire identified an old injury was holding me back, introduced me to a good physio and worked closely with her on my rehab program. Claire pushes me hard but is very careful about adapting my program to avoid the potential for injury. My wife has also started seeing Claire and has got a lot out of the sessions.
